Beginning of Social Media Journey

January 17th, we dove straight into the material for our social media strategy class. I am honestly thrilled and nervous all at the same time to begin this journey. Right now, I am on twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Pinterest, and Vine. I know how to work these various media. But do I understand them? No Do I use them to the best of their ability? Heck no.  I am so ready to learn all that I can and gain a better understanding of what I am doing.

I will try my best to relate what I learned in our first lecture to what I hope to one day make a career out of: wedding planning. We first talked about where social media tools fit into Public Relations. I do believe that each of the ways we discussed in class (deliberate, planned, performance, public interest, two-way communication, and strategic management of competition and conflict) can be applied to the wedding industry. Each relationship may not directly apply to the wedding planning process, but I will utilize these tools in order to better represent my business in the world of social media.

After comparing the definition of Public Relations from 1982 to today, I realized that this is much like wedding planning. Old definition: “Public relations helps an organization and its public adapt mutually to each other.” New definition: “It is a strategic communications process that builds mutually beneficial relationships between organizations and their publics.” Wedding planning used to not be a sought after career path because weddings were not a huge production as they are today. With social media like Pinterest and Instagram, brides are getting ideas about what they can do for their wedding at the tip of the fingers. The problem is that they do not always necessarily know how to make this happen. Weddings used to adapt to all fit the same mold. Now, weddings are unique and you have options. Wedding planners and brides must build a mutually beneficial relationship in order to succeed. A bride voices her wants and opinions to her planner, while the planner is allowed to get creative while also being a voice of reason.

The wedding industry is very interconnected inside the world wide web. It is very beneficial for a coordinator to be able to blog, tweet, and instagram their work. Social media is not only useful for customers, but for other wedding professionals. I can use other planners work as inspiration, as reasons to show why or why not something will work for a bride. This is where the two-way symmetric model of PR is played out. Each side of the relationship gains a better understanding of the other.

Before writing this blog post, I was worried that Public Relations and Wedding Planning would be relatable. It has actually helped me to better understand the information, as well as realize the importance for me to learn it. I am now even more anxious to discover the world of social media, and how I will be able to relate it weddings.
